The Peat House is a very tranquil place in which to relax, unwind and enjoy the unique natural beauty of this special part of the world. Set in the small hamlet of Row in the Lyth valley, it stands on the hillside with magnificent views in all directions. Surrounded by damson orchards, fields and trees. Access is via a narrow lane which only leads to the hamlet of just twenty or so houses. Most of the well known attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach, yet the cottage feels far from the noise and crowds.  The Lyth valley offers outstanding natural beauty with good walking and has a superb selection of country pubs and restaurants to visit, the nearest of which is 10 minutes walk.

Sorry - we have a strict policy of no pets or smoking

We set out to create a home from home - our own experiences of self catering holidays have been very variable - so our aim was to achieve a very high standard of comfort and facilities. The cottage was designed and furnished with your every need and comfort in mind, using only high quality furniture, fittings and equipment.  The Peat House is inspected by the English Tourism Council, who have high standards for holiday homes and was awarded a 4 star grading in December 2012.

The cottage was built in the mid 18th Century and was originally used as a peat store for the farm. The peat was cut in the valley, dried in the Peat House, then used as fuel for heating and cooking. Following extensive building work and modernisation, the house is now the perfect holiday home - exposed oak beams, wood burning stove, a superb kitchen and two  bedrooms each with their own bathroom, one with a whirlpool bath.  The cottage is centrally heated by oil combi boiler and we provide a starter quantity of logs for the wood burning stove.

Accommodation is on 3 levels: Large ground floor room with vaulted ceiling and oak beams, with superb fitted kitchen, dining and lounge areas. Sit outside and relax on the wooden deck with lovely views. On the upper floor a twin bedroom with exposed beams and an en-suite bathroom with bath with shower.  On the lower floor is a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom with whirlpool bath and shower over.

There is off road parking for up to 2 cars in front of the cottage and a lockable storage area big enough to take several bikes.  The wooden decking is secure and safe for children and we provide a gas barbecue and the gas.

Just 10 minutes walk takes you to the Lyth Valley Hotel which has a bar with a good selection of ales and a full restaurant which serves good food. Many local walks start just by the cottage, some easy and others more demanding.

The Peat House has leisure club membership at the Damson Dene Hotel which allows up to four people free access  to the leisure club. The facilities include a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym and it's only 5 minutes drive from the cottage.

We provide free internet access via a BT Wi-Fi Broadband Home Hub - just bring your laptop or hand held device. We provide the access codes to connect by Wi-Fi or you can connect by the ethernet cable we also provide. We do not provide a computer.

The cottage has Freesat HD satellite TV along with a 42" plasma screen. The home cinema system is capable of playing Bluray, DVD or CD discs - sit back and enjoy.

Location

The cottage is in the Lake District National Park at The Row, a small hamlet near Crosthwaite, set above the valley at the foot of Whitbarrow Scar.  It can easily be found on the map by looking for Lake Windermere, then from the bottom half of the lake you will see Crosthwaite to the right and Row lies a mile south.  For those travelling by car to the area, leave the M6 at junction 36 and after just 15 minutes on the A590/A5074 you arrive at the cottage. There are good links by coach, bus and rail to the area and a direct link to Windermere by rail from Manchester Airport, but you will need a taxi for the last part of your journey.

Children

Children are very welcome and we have catered for their special needs.

We can provide a cot (you need to bring your own bedding), highchair and all the safety equipment you might need - you only need to let us know and they will  be ready for you. The decking area is particularly safe with a lockable gate to prevent access to the bridal path and lane. We have those small but important items you may have forgotten to bring, such as a night light, children's cutlery, plastic plates, cups and even a step stool for the toilet. We also have a Z bed available for slightly older children who are too big for the cot but you will need to bring your own bedding.
